About

Global Design Journal looks at design as a way people shape and interpret the world around them. We cover objects, visual culture, spaces, histories and making, with attention to how ideas move between places and acquire new meanings.

What we look at

A chair, a package, a poster or a public room can open a window onto design choices. We explore form, material, use, visual language and the histories that give designed things context. Our coverage ranges across places and periods without treating any one style as the default.

Who this is for

This is for curious readers, whether you work in a creative field or simply like to know why a familiar object looks or works the way it does. You do not need specialist knowledge. We aim to give you a few clear things to notice and questions you can carry into the next room, street or shop.

How we approach design

We describe what can be seen, distinguish observation from interpretation and make room for more than one reading. Design is shaped by context: a form can travel, be adapted and mean something different in another place. We avoid treating broad cultural labels as explanations in themselves.

Our point of view

Design makes the world legible

A small detail can tell a bigger story about use, place and culture. We slow down to notice the choices behind designed things.
